So, you haven’t been feeling well for a long time. You know you should try harder to take better care of yourself, but you haven’t gotten around to it.
I’m sure you can think of a lot of excuses for poor self care. Just in case you can’t let me list some for you:
I've already been having problems for so long. What does it matter if I wait a little longer?
This isn't the right time. I have this, that and the other thing going on right now.
I have to do this one other thing first, then I promise I’ll focus on taking better care of myself.
Maybe if I keep waiting, things will get better on their own.
Maybe if I change other things besides the ones I don’t want to do, things will improve.
I don't have any proof that making this change will fix things.
I've already given up so much. I can't give up anything more.
Here is the rebuttal to each of those excuses about lack of self care:
Every day you wait to improve your self care, you are letting good health slip further away from you.
There may never be the exact right time. Sometimes you just have to stop waiting and start doing.
How many times have you told yourself after this “one thing” you were going to make changes? And it didn’t happen, did it? See bullet point #2.
Waiting for things to be different while doing nothing differently is the definition of insanity.
You know what you need to do. Just do it.
Maybe there is no 100% proof that making changes will make you feel better.
If you don’t give up something now that is harming you, think about the damage it will do to you over time. Instead of looking at the way to health as losing something, think about all the things you will gain if you are willing to bring more healthful habits into your life.
Remember, we all choose what we do with our time. Choose what’s best for you and our health.
